Commercial Truck Insurance Built For The Crossroads

Indianapolis sits where I-65, I-70, I-69 and I-74 all meet, with I-465 carrying the ring around the whole thing. It is the reason Indiana calls itself the Crossroads of America. Indianapolis International runs the second largest FedEx Express hub in the world, behind only Memphis, and the warehouse corridor through Plainfield, Avon and Whitestown has turned the west and north sides of the ring into one long loading dock.

It is also a brokered freight town, and that is where Indianapolis carriers get caught out. When this much of your work comes off a load board or a 3PL, what you actually need is set by broker contracts, not by the legal minimum. Higher cargo limits, additional insured wording, a cap on your deductible, sometimes reefer breakdown added back in. Carriers buy to the state floor, win a load, and find out at the certificate stage that the floor was never the number that mattered.

Year Two And Beyond

Your Second Year Should Cost Less Than Your First

Plenty of Indianapolis carriers renew with the same company for years without ever testing the market, and never find out what a clean two years is actually worth.

What Changes After Year One

You Are A Different Risk Now

Clean loss runsReal leverage
Experienced drivers on fileBetter tiers open up
Documented radius and lanesMore carriers quote
Verifiable authority historyOut of new-venture pricing

A dry van or reefer fleet working out of Indianapolis with a couple of clean years and experienced drivers behind it is about as competitively quoted as commercial trucking gets. Being inside the ring, with freight moving in four directions, is part of why. If your renewal has just rolled over at the same carrier every year, you have almost certainly never seen what that is worth.

Coverage We Place For Indianapolis Carriers

Every operation is different. These are the coverages that matter most to a fleet running out of Indianapolis and central Indiana.

Primary Liability

Bodily injury and property damage at the limits FMCSA and Indiana require. On brokered freight the $1,000,000 figure is effectively mandatory, so the legal floor rarely tells you what to buy.

Motor Truck Cargo

Covers the freight you are hauling. Read the exclusions closely here, because the limit a broker demands and the limit that actually pays are not always the same number.

Physical Damage

Your tractor and trailer, on and off the job. Worth getting right in a city with this much deadhead around the ring, and worth checking that a leased tractor is scheduled at the value your lease actually requires.

Non-Trucking Liability

For owner operators leased on under dispatch, covering the gap when the truck is off the motor carrier's authority. Common around Indianapolis, where a lot of drivers run leased to a larger fleet rather than on their own paper.

General Liability

Premises and operations exposure at your yard, dock or terminal, which the Plainfield, Avon and Whitestown warehouses will require in writing before they let you on site.

Filings

Form E with Indiana for intrastate authority, BMC-91 and MCS-90 with FMCSA for interstate. Your insurer files them, not you, and a filing that never went through is something you usually discover at the worst moment. We coordinate all of it.

Know Your Numbers

Indiana Requirements, Short Version

The full breakdown lives on our Indiana trucking insurance page. Here is what a Indianapolis carrier needs to know today.

Interstate — Crossing State Lines

Federal FMCSA Minimums

General freight$750,000
Oil transport$1,000,000
Most hazardous materials$5,000,000

The legal minimum is not the market minimum. Nearly every broker in this corridor requires $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo, so that is what most carriers here actually carry.

Intrastate — Indiana Only

Indiana State Minimums

Vehicles under 10,001 lbs GVWR$300,000
General freight, 10,001+ lbs$750,000
Hazardous materials$1M–$5M

Indiana-only for-hire carriers register with the Indiana Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services on Form IOA-1 and need a Form E insurance filing, submitted by your insurance company rather than by you. Carriers at 10,001+ lbs GVWR also need a USDOT number. Given how close Indianapolis is to Ohio and Michigan, the first thing worth settling is whether you are actually intrastate at all.

Common Questions

Indianapolis Trucking Insurance FAQ

How much does trucking insurance cost in Indianapolis, IN?
It depends on your radius, equipment, loss history, driver CDL experience and how long your authority has been active. A Indianapolis fleet running dry van or reefer on regional Midwest lanes with two or more years of clean authority and experienced company drivers generally prices meaningfully better than a first-year operation. Because we are independent, we shop your risk to 50+ A-rated carriers and let them compete rather than quoting one company's rate.
My broker wants $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo. Is that normal?
Normal, and usually the number that actually decides your policy. The federal floor is $750,000 of auto liability and Indiana sets its own intrastate minimums, but those are legal minimums rather than market ones. Most brokers and 3PLs working the Indianapolis warehouse corridor want $1,000,000 auto liability, $100,000 cargo, a deductible they are comfortable with, and themselves listed as certificate holder or additional insured. Read the broker packet before you bind, because buying coverage up after you have already taken the load is how carriers end up paying for the same year twice.
Do I need Indiana intrastate authority if I am based in Indianapolis?
Only if you genuinely run for-hire loads that both pick up and deliver inside Indiana. If so, you register with the Indiana Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services using Form IOA-1 and your insurance company files a Form E for you. Carriers at 10,001 lbs GVWR and above also need a USDOT number. If your freight regularly crosses into Ohio or Michigan, the federal side is what governs and we set the policy up accordingly.
Do you write dry van, reefer and flatbed fleets out of Indianapolis?
Yes, and that profile is the core of what our market competes hardest for. Indianapolis produces a lot of it: regional and moderately long-haul operations running out of the distribution corridor with a year or more of authority behind them. We also place new ventures, dump, auto haul, oversize and specialized work through other carriers in our book, so it is worth asking even if you do not fit that description.
Do you write semi truck insurance in Indianapolis?
Yes. We write semi truck insurance for single-truck owner operators and for fleets running tractor-trailers on I-65, I-70 and the I-465 ring. We shop primary liability, cargo and physical damage across 50+ A-rated carriers, and we handle the Form E and federal filings that come with it.
Can a new authority get trucking insurance in Indianapolis?
Yes. Several of our carriers have dedicated new-authority programs, and we handle the federal and state filings so your authority activates as fast as possible. Pricing is higher in year one and improves as you build clean history. Start with our guide to getting trucking insurance with new authority.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?
Once your policy is bound, certificates typically go out the same day, often within the hour during business hours, and our clients get 24/7 COI access. A truck that is not rolling is not earning, and we run our service team accordingly.
