The Air Freight Capital Of America

Commercial Truck Insurance In Kentucky, Built For Bluegrass Freight

Kentucky punches far above its weight in freight. UPS Worldport in Louisville is the largest automated package facility on the planet, Amazon Air’s $1.5 billion primary US hub and DHL’s Americas hub both fly out of CVG in Northern Kentucky, and Ford, Toyota, and the Bowling Green Corvette plant keep auto haulers running around the clock. Add bourbon, agriculture, and coal, and there’s a reason I-65, I-64, I-71, I-75, and I-24 stay full of trucks.

Nova Coverage insures Kentucky motor carriers from our Indianapolis headquarters, one state line away. We know the drill on Kentucky’s split-limit intrastate minimums, the insurer-filed Form E, and the KYU weight-distance tax that catches so many carriers off guard — and because we’re independent, we shop your risk to 50+ A-rated carriers and make them compete.

  • Form E filed with KYTC by your insurer before your authority activates — we handle it
  • KYU guidance included — the 59,999-lb weight-distance tax trap, explained in plain English
  • 50+ A-rated carriers quoted on every Kentucky trucking insurance policy
  • New authorities welcome — same-day COIs once you’re bound

Kentucky Trucking Insurance Requirements

Kentucky does things its own way: split-limit intrastate minimums, an insurer-filed Form E, and the famous KYU tax. Here’s what the law requires — we handle every filing below on your behalf.

Interstate — Crossing State Lines

Federal FMCSA Minimums

General freight (non-hazardous)$750,000
Oil transport$1,000,000
Most hazardous materials$5,000,000

The legal minimum isn’t the market minimum: nearly every shipper and broker requires $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo, so that’s what most Kentucky motor carriers actually carry. Your insurer files the BMC-91/91X with FMCSA and attaches the MCS-90 endorsement — we take care of both.

Intrastate — Kentucky Only

Kentucky State Minimums

Vehicles over 18,000 lbs (per person / per accident BI)$100K / $600K
Property damage, over 18,000 lbs$50,000
Vehicles 18,000 lbs or less (BI / accident / PD)$100K/$300K/$50K

Kentucky-only for-hire carriers get an intrastate certificate from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Division of Motor Carriers (Form TC 95-1, $25 plus $10 per vehicle), and your insurance company must file the Form E proof of insurance before the certificate is granted. Hazmat haulers follow the federal $1M–$5M tiers. Heads up: most brokers and shippers still want $1M CSL, so Kentucky’s low legal minimums rarely match what the market demands. We’ll spec the right limits for how you actually run.

Kentucky also requires a KYU number. It is a Kentucky weight distance tax license, separate from your USDOT number and MC authority, and it catches a lot of new carriers off guard. We broke down what a KYU number is and who needs one in plain English.

Common Questions

Kentucky Trucking Insurance FAQ

How much does trucking insurance cost in Kentucky?
It depends on your radius, cargo, driving history, CDL experience, and how long your authority has been active. As a rough ballpark, a new-authority owner operator hauling general freight often lands in the range of $9,000–$18,000+ per year for liability, cargo, and physical damage combined — while carriers with 2+ years of clean authority typically pay significantly less. We shop your risk to 50+ carriers and let them compete instead of quoting one company’s rate.
What is a KYU number and do I need one?
The KYU is Kentucky’s weight-distance tax license, and it’s the state’s most famous gotcha. Any truck with a combined licensed weight of 59,999 lbs or more needs a KYU number to run Kentucky highways — even out-of-state carriers just passing through. The tax is currently $0.0285 per mile, and quarterly returns are required even for quarters with zero Kentucky miles; missed filings bring penalties and can get the license revoked. We’ll tell you straight whether you need one and point you to the right registration.
What are the Kentucky trucking insurance requirements?
Interstate carriers follow the federal minimums: $750,000 for general freight, $1M for oil, $5M for most hazmat, with the BMC-91 filing and MCS-90 endorsement. Kentucky-only (intrastate) for-hire carriers use split limits under KRS 281.655: $100,000/$600,000 bodily injury plus $50,000 property damage for vehicles over 18,000 lbs, or $100K/$300K/$50K at 18,000 lbs and under. In practice, most shippers and brokers require $1M regardless — we’ll quote the limits your contracts actually demand.
What insurance filings does my Kentucky trucking company need?
Kentucky intrastate for-hire carriers need a Form E filed with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet by the insurance company before the intrastate certificate (Form TC 95-1) is granted. Interstate carriers need the BMC-91/91X with FMCSA and the MCS-90 endorsement. Kentucky-based trucks may also need KIT (Kentucky Intrastate Fuel Tax) if they run 26,001+ lbs in-state only, plus IRP, IFTA, and UCR depending on the operation. We handle the insurance filings and walk you through the rest.
Can a new authority get trucking insurance in Kentucky?
Yes — new ventures are one of our specialties. Several of our 50+ carriers have dedicated new-authority programs for Kentucky trucking companies, and we handle your federal and state filings (BMC-91, MCS-90, Form E) so your authority activates as fast as possible.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance (COI)?
Once your policy is bound, certificates typically go out same-day — often within the hour during business hours — and our clients get 24/7 COI access. When a broker at the Worldport gate wants proof of coverage, you can’t wait until tomorrow.
