Commercial Truck Insurance In Michigan, Built For Michiganders

Michigan is the only state where a route plan routinely includes an international bridge. The Ambassador and the new Gordie Howe carry the busiest commercial crossing in the country, and the freight is automotive just-in-time — where a late truck stops an assembly line, not just a delivery. If you run trucks here, the clock is unforgiving — and your trucking insurance should be built for it.

Nova Coverage is an independent trucking insurance agency headquartered in Indianapolis. We insure Michigan motor carriers of every size — from a single owner operator with a new MC number to established fleets — and because we're independent, we shop your risk to 50+ A-rated carriers and make them compete for your business.

  • Indianapolis-based — a real local team, not a call center three states away
  • 50+ A-rated carriers quoted on every Michigan trucking insurance policy
  • Form E, BMC-91 & MCS-90 filings handled for you, at no extra charge
  • New authorities welcome — same-day COIs once you're bound

Michigan Trucking Insurance Requirements

Whether you cross state lines or haul Michigan-only freight, here's the coverage the law requires — and what shippers and brokers will actually ask you for. We handle every filing below on your behalf.

Interstate — Crossing State Lines

Federal FMCSA Minimums

General freight (non-hazardous)$750,000
Oil transport$1,000,000
Most hazardous materials$5,000,000

The legal minimum isn't the market minimum: nearly every shipper and broker requires $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo, so that's what most Michigan motor carriers actually carry. Your insurer files the BMC-91/91X with FMCSA and attaches the MCS-90 endorsement — we take care of both.

Intrastate — Michigan Only

Michigan State Minimums

General freight, 10,001+ lbs$750,000
Oil and other bulk hazmat$1,000,000
Explosives, poison gas, radioactive$5,000,000

Michigan adopts the federal Part 387 limits for intrastate carriers under the Motor Carrier Safety Act. Michigan-only for-hire carriers apply for CVED Authority through the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division — online only, there is no paper form — and your insurer files a Form E. Renewal runs 1 October to 1 December each year. Michigan is also a no-fault state, so PIP sits on top of your liability limit and the MCCA assessment attaches per vehicle. We’ll walk you through both. For the full breakdown, including why the 1 October to 1 December renewal window decides whether you are still legal on 2 January, see how Michigan intrastate authority and the Form E filing actually work.

Common Questions

Michigan Trucking Insurance FAQ

How much does trucking insurance cost in Michigan?
It depends on your radius, cargo, driving history, CDL experience, and how long your authority has been active. As a rough ballpark, a new-authority owner operator hauling general freight in Michigan often lands somewhere in the range of $16,000–$30,000+ per year for liability, cargo, and physical damage combined — while carriers with 2+ years of clean authority typically pay significantly less. This is an estimate, not a quote: because we’re independent, we shop your risk to 50+ carriers and let them compete instead of quoting you one company’s rate.
What are the Michigan trucking insurance requirements?
If you cross state lines, FMCSA requires at least $750,000 in public liability for general freight, $1,000,000 for oil transport, and $5,000,000 for most hazardous materials — though nearly all shippers and brokers require $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo. Michigan adopts those same federal limits for intrastate carriers, so a Michigan-only carrier at 10,001 lbs GVWR or more is held to $750,000 for general freight, plus mandatory no-fault PIP.
What insurance filings does my Michigan trucking company need?
Interstate motor carriers need a BMC-91/91X filing with FMCSA plus the MCS-90 endorsement. Michigan intrastate for-hire carriers need Form E filed by their insurance company with the Michigan State Police CVED, plus a Form H if you move household goods. CVED authority renews annually between 1 October and 1 December, and missing it means revocation on 1 January. We handle the filings and remind you before renewal.
Do I need a USDOT number if I only haul within Michigan?
Yes. Michigan is one of the states that requires a USDOT number for intrastate operation, generally at 10,001 lbs GVWR or more, for placarded hazmat at any weight, and for passenger thresholds. Note that the CVED authority checklist references a higher 26,001 lb figure for its own application, so the two requirements are not identical — worth confirming your exact situation with MSP CVED, and we can help you read it.
How does Michigan no-fault affect my truck insurance?
Materially. Michigan requires Personal Injury Protection on top of the liability limit, so your $750,000 or $1,000,000 is residual liability rather than the whole policy. The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association assessment also attaches per vehicle each year. This is the main reason Michigan commercial auto prices higher than neighbouring states, and it is why a carrier who does not write Michigan regularly will often come back with a number that looks wrong.
Can a new authority get trucking insurance in Michigan?
Absolutely — new ventures are one of our specialties. Several of our 50+ carriers have dedicated new-authority programs for Michigan trucking companies, and we'll handle your federal and state filings (BMC-91, MCS-90, Form E) so your authority activates as fast as possible.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance (COI)?
Once your policy is bound, certificates typically go out same-day — often within the hour during business hours — and our clients get 24/7 COI access. A truck that isn't rolling isn't earning, and we run our service team accordingly.
